UK court rules that Apple infringed on two standard essential patents by Optis

Just last week Apple signed a long-term patent agreement with Nokia that covers 5G and other technologies. However, Cupertino has no such agreement with Optis Cellular Technology, which is suing Apple over eight patents. The UK Court of Appeal just confirmed a decision from March 2022 that states that Apple infringed on two of them.

The two patents were ruled to be essential for 4G connectivity and were found to be used by Apple’s iPhones. Apple appealed the decision in May, but that appeal was rejected by the court.

All of this is a part of an ongoing legal saga that began four ago. In 2020 a jury in East Texas decided that Apple owes sibling Optis affiliate PanOptis $506 million, then in 2022 the sum was lowered to $300 million, which eventually stuck as the court decided not to hold a third trial.
